Tom Ireland
Tom Ireland is a freelance science journalist, award-winning magazine editor and head of publications at the Royal Society of Biology. After graduating with a degree in biology from Cardiff University, he studied for a postgraduate diploma in journalism with Press Media Training (now the Press Association) in London. As a freelance journalist he has written science stories for outlets including BBC News, New Scientist and the Observer. He has a long association with BBC Science Focus magazine, explaining biomedical and microbiological topics for their young and non-academic readership. As the editor of The Biologist (the magazine of the Royal Society of Biology) since 2013, he has interviewed hundreds of scientists from around the world about their work, and produces a well-loved life-science magazine with a reach far beyond its core readership of bioscience professionals. As such he has an excellent overview of the life-science sector and access to contacts in the most exciting fields in modern bioscience. His work has been recognised with awards including ‘Best Editor’ and ‘Best Specialist Magazine’ at the Scottish Magazine Awards, where the magazine is published. He lives in the Hertfordshire countryside, with his wife, daughter and two cats.
