Samer Nashef

Samer Nashef is a heart surgeon at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, UK. He qualified as a doctor at the University of Bristol in 1980, and trained in general surgery in London and Exeter. He went on to train in heart surgery in Glasgow, Sheffield and Manchester and in Bordeaux in France. He was appointed consultant surgeon at Papworth in 1992. He practises all types of heart surgery in adults but specializes in minimally invasive surgery, operations to repair heart valves and surgery for disturbances of the heart rhythm. He has many research interests, a major one being the measurement and monitoring of the quality of surgical treatment. In that field, he has led national and international projects, including EuroSCORE, which calculates the predicted risk of death from heart operations and is one of the most successful risk modesl in medicine, used worldwide and credited with saving tens of thousands of lives. He has written over 200 scientific papers and been invited to lecture in more than 30 countries. In his spare time, he compiles cryptic crosswords for the Guardian and the Financial Times.
