Charlie Taverner

Dr Charlie Taverner wrote his PhD and an academic book on food history in the UK, and is currently part of a ground-breaking project studying the history of Irish food using a range of historical, archaeological, and experimental techniques. As a writer, he cut his teeth as an agricultural journalist, reporting on the business of beef, dairy, sheep and pigs at Farmers Weekly, and writing about the food industry and farming for publications like Vice, City Metric, The Grocer and City AM. Dr Taverner grew up on his family’s dairy farm, has herded cows and fed calves, has sliced steaks and scrubbed fridges in a butcher’s shop, and has walked the line in an abattoir. He is at his happiest in a field with a cow.

Taverner is currently at work on a book titled Food Before the Factory, to be published in 2026 by Profile (UK & Commonwealth).
