Adam Becker
Adam Becker is an astrophysicist and science writer. He has written for the BBC, NPR, Scientific American, New Scientist, the New York Times and other media outlets. He has also recorded a series of animated videos with the BBC, exploring big questions in astronomy and physics. He developed online interactive features for New Scientist, which allowed viewers to explore the oldest light in the Universe, gain a broader perspective on the hunt for planets around other stars and discover the mathematical world of prime numbers. And his unique brand of science storytelling has been featured in three episodes of the popular 'Story Collider' podcast.
Born in New Jersey in 1984, Becker studied philosophy and physics at Cornell University and then earned a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Michigan in 2012, where he researched the distribution of matter and energy in the Universe a fraction of a second after the Big Bang. In early 2023, he was the science communicator in residence at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at the University of California, Berkeley; before that, he was a visiting researcher in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine, and before that a visiting scholar at Berkeley’s Office for History of Science and Technology. He is also the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Book Grant for work on his first book, What is Real? The Unfinished Quest for the Meaning of Quantum Physics. He lives in Oakland, California.
